Thumb: Meet the Nexus S, The First Gingerbread Running Smartphone
Google and Samsung has finally, officially open the curtain of the Nexus S™, the world’s first handset to feature the latest version of Google’s Android platform.

Coming in simple, yet solid candybar design, the Nexus S measures 63×123.9×10.9 mm and weighs about 129.0 grams.

As the first of its kind, this Android 2.3-running Nexus S is powered by a 1 GHz Cortex A8 (Hummingbird) processor, enabling it to produces rich 3D graphics, faster upload and download times and supports HD-like multimedia content. A robust 512 MB of RAM is installed on board, and it comes with a 16GB (iNAND) of internal memory.

Android 2.3, Gingerbread, is the fastest version of Android yet. It features support for Near Field Communication (NFC), a new and improved keyboard with multi-touch support, Internet calling (VoIP/SIP support), and a clean new user interface.

At front, the Nexus S sports a bright 4-inch Super AMOLED display with 480×800 pixels (WVGA) resolution; a contour display with curved glass screen, enhanced with an anti-fingerprint display coating. It is a capacitive touchscreen one. This phone also have a front facing VGA camera which is located right above the display. While at its back, this smartphone features a 5 megapixels autofocus camera with LED flash, along with support for HQ video recording.

In terms of hardware, the Nexus S is equipped with haptic feedback vibration, three-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, digital compass, proximity sensor and light sensor.

Nexus S runs on quad-band GSM and tri-band HSPA compatible, with support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA as well as 5.76Mbps HSUPA. This smartphone also packs a decent connectivity support with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Near Field Communication (NFC), built in GPS with A-GPS support and a microUSB 2.0 port.

Nexus S also includes popular Android features such as portable Wi-Fi hotspot, true multitasking, access to Google mobile services such as Google Search™, Gmail™, Google Maps™ with Navigation, Voice Actions, Google Voice™ and YouTube™, and access to over 100,000 apps and widgets on Android Market™.

Being an Android 2.3-running smartphone, I guess there is no need mentioning how good is Nexus S on dealing with the website or playing media files. Simply, we can count on it. In addition, as expected, a 3.5 mm stereo audio jack is present.

According to the official PR, Nexus S can be purchased (unlocked) online and in-store from Best Buy retailers in the U.S. starting after December 16 and at Carphone Warehouse retailers in the U.K. after December 20. No pricing unveiled yet there.
